Kirsten Boie, one of the most reknown German authors of children and youth books, had been born in 1950 in Hamburg, made her doctor's degree in literary science and was a teacher at a high school and a comprehensive school from 1978 to 1983. Her first book already, published under the name of "Paul has been a good choice" in 1985, became an outrageous success. Meanwhile over fifty of her books have been published by Friedrich Oetinger publishing house alone, being translated into sixteen languages. Books, that won't leave a doubt on whose side the author stands. Not forgetting the grown-ups on the other hand make her characters so sympathetic and her books both lovable and readable.
"Looking for authors, who succeed the balancing act between the demands of modern literature and narratives for children, one inevitably ends up with Kirsten Boie. Taking in experimental forms of language as in "Me all cool", in dealing with the phenomenom of right-wing radicalism in "Grown-ups talk. Marco has done something." or in everyday stories for the youngest, she's always thematically on the level of the children, though having the skills and ways of an aware and grown-up narrator. She doesn't go down on her knees writing for children but writes standing: An advantage that lifts her titles out of the grey mass of streamlined children books (Kinderliteratur aktuell (topical children literature) May 1997, published by Institut für Jugendbuchforschung (books for youth research institute), Frankfurt/Main)
In 2007 Kristen Boie is rewarded with the special prize of the German youth literature prize for her complete works. The jury honours Kirsten Boie "as consequent and uncompromising advocate of an own literature for children and youth" and "as tireless and successful pioneer of aesthetic education and lasting reading promotion".
